Candida and Magnesium | Why you are Deficient in this Mineral

Millions of Americans each year suffer from symptoms caused by magnesium deficiency in the body.  In fact, many of these symptoms will get misdiagnosed by the medical establishment and the individual will be told that he or she has some sort of sickness or disorder.

This is because magnesium deficiency can mimic many so called diseases and disorders established by the medical community.  Unfortunately, when this occurs, individuals are often given some type of drug in order to combat a problem that has been misdiagnosed.

It’s important to understand that research has shown that close to half of the population was deficient in magnesium in the year 2005 (1).  We believe it’s safe to say that this number has risen considerably since then.

With that being said, there are many reasons to blame for this boom in magnesium deficiency across the country.  Many believe that modern farming techniques and NPK soil is the main reason.  Others believe poor diet followed by the majority of the population is to blame.

Although these are both valid points and we believe both hold truth, we believe that an altered gut microbiome is the main reason for this sudden boom in magnesium deficient individuals.  In particular, those suffering from a candida overgrowth in the body and gut may be more prone to developing a magnesium deficiency.

The Rise of Candida over the Years

The rise of individuals suffering from fungal overgrowth’s such as candida has risen considerably over the last several years.  This is mainly due to the high carbohydrate, high sugar, and little to no quality animal food diets followed by the majority of the population.

These types of diets can lead to long term health consequences and can never promote optimal health in the body.  This is because sugar and starchy carbohydrates are the main fuel source of candida.  This pathogenic fungus uses sugars, ferments them, and then produces toxic byproducts which are released into the body.  It’s also capable of crowding out the good bacteria in the gut and taking control over gut microbiome.

If you follow a high sugar and high carbohydrate diet and are displaying signs of magnesium deficiency, there is a good chance that you may be suffering from a candida overgrowth in the body. If this is the case, it’s important that you cut out all sugar and starchy carbohydrates immediately in order to inhibit the growth of candida.  Also, be sure to go to our candida diet protocol page for an easy to follow program that can help inhibit the growth of candida in the body and can help improve health to an optimal state.

How to Know You Magnesium Deficient

If you’re magnesium deficient, there are a few signs and symptoms to look out for.  Also, if possible, getting a comprehensive blood test done on all mineral levels in the body can be extremely useful.  Unfortunately, conventional medicine will usual not test for mineral deficiencies so it will be on you to find a lab that will perform the test.

With that said, below are a few symptoms that are often related to magnesium deficiency in the body.

  • Muscle Twitching
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Hyperactivity
  • Inability to relax
  • Brain Fog
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Nervousness
  • Constipation

If you suffer from any of these symptoms, there is a chance that you may be suffering from a magnesium deficiency.  If you follow a high carbohydrate and high sugar diet there is even a better chance that your magnesium deficiency is related to candida overgrowth in the body.

How Sugar and Candida Cause Mineral Deficiencies

It’s important to understand that if you follow a high sugar diet, there is a good chance that you are naturally pulling minerals from your body in order to deal with this toxic substance.  This is because the body will use its own mineral reserves in order to cope with the toxic effects sugar has on the body.  In other words, consuming more sugar will naturally deplete your mineral content in the body.

When we couple this high sugar intake while simultaneously suffering from a candida overgrowth in the body, you have the perfect recipe for becoming both magnesium and mineral deficient.  Those with candid overgrowth in the gut often have inflamed intestines which cannot properly digest and make use of the minerals in the food.  Also, these inflamed intestines and overgrowth of candida can give rise to several different food allergies which makes obtaining the proper nourishment even more difficult.

It’s for this reason that high sugar and high carbohydrate diets are not designed for long term health in the human body.  In fact, our ancestors all consumed extremely low sugar diets.  Also, this was not by choice, but it was how nature dictated how we should eat.

The most abundant food in nature is animal foods.  All plant foods are typically extremely toxic and only used for their medicinal value.  Supplemental foods such as rice, tubers, and vegetables is apparent across many Native American tribes still living a traditional way of life. However, the year round staple in all of the diets of these Native Americans are high quality animal foods.

Gut Inflammation, Candida, and Magnesium

As mentioned before, those suffering from candida overgrowth in the gut will almost always have intestinal inflammation.  In fact, research has found that patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) almost always suffer from a candida overgrowth as well (2).

Furthermore, when the intestines become inflamed, nutrient absorption becomes extremely poor.  As a result, your body will naturally lose its ability to properly absorb and assimilate the nutrients found within your food.  When this happens, the body becomes more prone to developing mineral deficiencies such as magnesium.

The best way to combat this intestinal inflammation is to drop all problematic foods from the diet.  This includes all sugar and high carbohydrate foods.  This can help inhibit the growth of candida, improve gut health, and improve the body’s ability to absorb magnesium.  However, this alone is often not enough which is why we recommended you follow our candida diet protocol.

The Best Foods for Magnesium Deficiency

If you suffer from a magnesium deficiency, you may be asking what foods you can eat in order to boost levels naturally in the body.  Unfortunately, it’s not this simple.  This is because the gut needs to be re-balanced and the growth of candida needs to be inhibited in order for magnesium to be properly absorbed and utilized.

As mentioned before, our candida diet protocol can be great for re-balancing the gut and inhibiting the growth of candida.  Also, cutting out all sugar and high carbohydrate foods is essential for correcting a magnesium deficiency in the body.  Furthermore, nuts and seeds should be limited due to their ability to irritate an already inflamed gut.

Below is a list of foods that can help combat a magnesium deficiency in the body.

  • High Quality Animal Foods
  • Organ Meats from Quality Animals
  • Bone Broth
  • Fermented Vegetables
  • Raw Milk Kefir
  • Wild Caught Fish
  • Sourdough Bread (No Sugar)
  • Coconut Oil and Meat (Anti-Fungal)

These foods in our opinion are the best for anyone dealing with both a magnesium deficiency and inflamed gut. These foods provide everything the body needs for optimal health and are extremely bio-available to the body.  All of these foods are both rich in vitamins and minerals and can help naturally boost mineral content in the body while also having a therapeutic effect on the gut.

Go Easy on the Plant Foods

You may have noticed that we do not recommend high amounts of plant foods in the diet.  Many will make the assumption that plant foods contain the highest amounts of magnesium and that more need to be consumed if dealing with a magnesium deficiency.  Unfortunately, this way of thinking is not correct.

This is because all plant foods contain anti-nutrients.  Research has already proven that anti-nutrients can contribute to gut inflammation and bind to key minerals making them unavailable to the body (3).  However, many will make the claim that green vegetables such as kale, spinach, beet tops, arugula, and other green plants are the best sources of magnesium.

Yet, they fail to mention that these foods contain extremely high amounts of anti-nutrients such as oxalates which can not only inflame the gut, but also rob minerals from the body. Many of these magnesium rich green plants also contain goitrogens which can cause thyroid disorders.  It should be mentioned that animal foods contain ZERO anti-nutrients and are easily absorbed and assimilated by the human body.
